Brother Ali – Another Country
Brother Ali has never been subtle, and “Another Country” isn’t about to start. The veteran Minneapolis MC comes out swinging at the current state of American politics — systemic racism, anti-immigration enforcement, the whitewashing of history — and ties it all together over jazzy production that gives the track both weight and momentum. The hook sets the tone immediately: “Welcome to the divided states / Land of the thief home of the slaves”.
The lyrics don’t pull punches. Ali draws a direct line from centuries of racial violence to present-day ICE operations (“Hoods on the past generations, now masks on the faces”), name-checks Tulsa and Detroit alongside post-9/11 foreign policy, and calls out the historical revisionism that keeps the cycle going. It’s dense, politically specific writing — the kind that rewards close listening. The jazz-inflected production gives it room to breathe without softening the message.
